Be Fraud Aware

It’s important to be aware of potential fraud opportunities. Here are some tips on how you can best protect yourself:

What are common types of fraud?

  • Emails, text messages, or phone calls from someone pretending to be a U of T resource, company, or government organization with knowledge of vour personal details
  • Offers desirable goods (e.g. job offers, free items) or threatens you (e.g. fines, loss of visa) to gain your money and/or information

When should I feel suspicious?

  • If it’s unexpected or unsolicited
  • If they ask for personal information or currency
  • If they try to redirect you to a different website or app
  • If they try to convince you of their legitimacy, even using your own information against you

How do I avoid being caught out?

  • Be aware of the legitimate methods that organizations will use to reach you and expect you to use.
  • When in doubt, contact the real organization directly to confirm whether the caller and request are legitimate.
  • Just because they know your personal details, it does not mean that they are legitimate! Be careful about what personal information is available out there about you.

What should I do if I have been impacted?

  • Document all record of communications related to the incident.
  • Contact Toronto Police (Fraud Line: 416-808-2222) or U of T Campus Safety:
    • Phone (Urgent: 416-978-2222; Non-Urgent: 416-978-2323)
