Review of Eligibility

PRE-Contract Eligibility Check

Each contract period, Graduate House conducts an eligibility check process in mid-August before the commencement of each contract period. During this review, residents who do not meet the eligibility criteria for the Fall and Winter periods will not be permitted to reside at Graduate House for the upcoming contract period.

Unfortunately, due to the high demand for spaces among current graduate and second-entry students, requests to continue occupancy at Graduate House for those who do not meet the eligibility criteria during the August eligibility check will not be approved.

Mid-Contract Eligibility Changes

Following the initial eligibility check in August of each year, residents may sometimes experience changes to their eligibility during their contract period. As outlined in the Occupancy Agreement, residents who undergo changes in their enrollment status that no longer align with the eligibility requirements for Graduate House are expected to promptly inform the Graduate House Office.

At this point, residents may inquire about the possibility of continuing their occupancy for the remainder of their contract period. However, these cases are reviewed on an individual basis, and approval is not guaranteed.

September to December

Fall Term

For Fall Term residency, Graduate House only accepts UofT students enrolled in a full-time UofT degree program in either the School of Graduate Studies or one of the second-entry professional faculties. Residents defending and submitting their corrected thesis by September 15th are not eligible to live in Graduate House during the Fall Term. International visiting graduate students require their host academic department to designate a recruitment space for them to be eligible.

Because many academic departments do not upload their registration data to ACORN until late summer, Graduate House confirms resident eligibility in mid-August. At that time, applicants found to be ineligible will be advised that their Fall term residence space is revoked. In the event that an ineligible Fall applicant is a summer resident, that applicant will be required to vacate their suite by the summer term move-out date. In both cases, application and confirmation deposits remain non-refundable in accordance with Graduate House’s refund policy.

January to April

Winter Term Eligibility

For Winter Term residency, Graduate House only accepts UofT students enrolled in a full-time UofT degree program in either The School of Graduate Studies or one of the second-entry professional faculties. Residents defending and submitting their corrected thesis by January 15th are not eligible to live in Graduate House during the Winter Term. International visiting graduate students, non-degree UofT students, part-time students, students from other institutions, and UofT alumni require special permission from the Dean in order to be eligible.

May to August

Summer Term Eligibility

During the summer term Graduate House expands its eligibility policy to admit current students of other post-secondary institutions (both graduate and undergraduate) as well as alumni of the University of Toronto. All non-UofT summer applicants who are given an offer of residence will be asked to prove their affiliation with a post-secondary institution. The following is a list of acceptable form of proof which can be submitted electronically (via e-mail) after an offer of residence is made to the applicant.

  • A copy of the applicant’s unofficial transcript from the post-secondary institution
  •  A letter from the post-secondary institution on letter head

Summer applicants who meet Graduate House’s eligibility requirements and submit the required application and deposit will be contacted with a residence offer when a space becomes available. At the time of residence offer, successful applicants will be asked to log back into the Application Portal to complete the remaining steps in the Application and pay the Confirmation Deposit. To minimize high summer turnover which would be disruptive to Graduate House’s academically-focused community environment, summer residents must commit to a 6 week period minimum stay at Graduate House.
